I am very late in writing this email to you....please accept my sincere apologies. It seems that time just gets away from
me over here.
I received your boxes of beanies the end of July. It took us awhile to get the village elders of Qalat to allow us to visit
the only all girl’s school in the province. We finally got to visit the school last month. What a wonderful sight
to see all these girls being allowed an education. The Taliban are completely against females getting an education so many
provinces are behind the curve in allowing girls to go to school.
At FOB Apache we currently have five females and three of us were able to go to the school. It was a great experience. We
handed out beanies and school supplies. We have planned another trip for next month to distribute more supplies.
Our FOB (forward operating base) is pretty isolated and we normally only get mail delivered once a week (if that). So, on
the day mail arrives spirits are high and everyone pitches in to sort it quickly. My unit has six more months to go! We
are doing a very important mission here – the Afghan people truly want independence and want to run their own country.
They just need help getting there. The army is so young and immature that it’s like teaching third graders. We do
a lot of repeating. But, the end result will be well worth it.
I visited beaniebabyambassador.com today and signed your guestbook. I would like to thank all your volunteers who donate
their time and their beanies to your cause. I would especially like to thank Lisa K. and Agnes G. for the beanies you sent
my way and for the postage. What a wonderful way to reach out to the children. And, the children are the future –
it will be their generation that will reap the benefits of what we’re doing.
Once again, thank you – and all Beanie Baby Ambassadors - very much for caring. Your support means a great deal to
all of us.
Take care and God Bless!
Melonaie
