Kids Collect Beanie Babies for Iraqis

Published 9/15/2006

PARADISE VALLEY - Third-grade Kiva elementary School teacher Mary Martine and her pupils want to send a cuddly army of Beanie babies for U.S. soldiers to distribute to Iraqi children.

Martine has assigned her pupils to send letters in Iraq for the past three years.

This year, she was put in touch with Beanie Baby Ambassador, a Paradise Valley organization that uses the small stuffed critters as ambassadors.

"We decided to expand our latter-writing campaign to include the stuffed animals," Martine said. "We'll send them with our letters and ask the soldiers to distribute them to the children of Iraq."

The goal is to collect at least 770 Beanie babies, about the same size as Kiva's pupil population, by today. Kiva is at 6911 E. McDonald Drive in Paradise Valley.
